AT&T and iPhones in Vermont

Yesterday Apple announced a much anticipated 3G iPhone, and for weeks now the iPhone has been unavailable for purchase from the Apple Store. With the big announcement of the new faster iPhone that’s now half the price at $199 and with cool new applications, our phone lines have really begun to buzz here at Small Dog!

Here in Vermont, AT&T has still not officially started up service, but for months now the buzz has been wild with Unicel announcing that many of it’s stores will be purchased by AT&T or Verizon depending on the location of the stores. I have been fielding many of these calls as I like many of our customers are on the quest for a new cell phone and I have been researching iPhone vs. Blackberrys since the AT&T and Unicel buzz started a few months ago. At this time there is still no magic crystal ball and we still do not know with any certainty when the takeover will officially occur.

I have searched blogs, called Unicel, scoured the Apple site and AT&T site for any information that I could possibly find on AT&T and Vermont, So far all I have gotten a lot of mixed answers. I followed a blog rumor I that indicated Unicel Stores were to magically convert to AT&T stores on June 2nd and thought this rumor was a sure thing when on June 1st I popped over to a Unicel store and saw a sign that said ‘closed for inventory.’ I was certain the blog rumor was true!

I went for a drive out to a Unicel store on June 2nd in the hopes that iPhones would sitting on the shelves the very next day, waiting for me to make a purchase, but to my dismay nothing had changed. A new rumor is abuzz this week that July 15th is the magic day and that new phones were expected in Unicel/AT&T stores in July or August. But as with the last round of information we really don’t know for sure. Many customers have emailed and called us with shocking dismay that we don’t have much more information than they do and even more disbelief to know that we don’t sell iPhones at this point either.

So we, like the rest of our readers and customers, are anxiously anticipating the Big Day iPhones really come to Vermont!

  1. The iPhone will now be in 70 countries, but not Vermont. Just does not make sense.

  2. It’s a crying shame VT has to to sit on the sidelines, jealously waiting to get a chance at the iPhone. I check the small dog blog almost daily to see if there are any updates, please keep us in the loop if you hear anything! Thanks!

  3. This morning in the illustrious Free Press, the state AG was quoted as saying that the AT&T & Verizon deal is off because of three counties in the southern part of the state not have access to choice of carrier. The article said that the state would explore all carriers and a resolution must be found within 120 days. Once again, the state has moved to stop a positive technology improvement.

  4. I agree. In the grand scheme this is a small thing. But it only supports the notion that VT is still “backwoods”, behind the times and a technological slug. People are leaving in droves and businesses are looking elsewhere to set up shop. Let’s get with the program and catch up to year-old technology.

  5. I agree. Sometimes I feel as if we’re off the map, secluded in our own little world when it comes to expanding our horizons with newer and better technology. I currently live in Illinois for I’m finishing up college out here and bought an iphone as soon as they came out. The problem I’m now facing is that I’m actually moving back to my home town in a year once I finish school. So the thought of giving up my beloved iphone, for me, is out of the question. I’ve talked to many At&t reps about this and even talked to Unicel myself to see if the rumors were true that At&t taking over for Unicel clients (I got conflicting messages as well). When talking to an At&t rep over the phone several weeks ago and explained what my future plans were about moving back to VT, I was threatened that if I use my iphone for a certain period time, they will cut off my service and I will be charged with a large fee! I even asked them if there was any way for me to pay them extra for additional fees that would cover any roaming charges and still, they told me that was out of the question. My father wants an iphone as well and between both of us, we haven’t been able to find out too much information either. I too have been checking small dog blog almost every day to see if anyone has heard anything new about this. Please let keep us in the loop if you find out any new information.

  7. Good luck, Vermont. I live 8 miles from downtown Cleveland in a zone clearly marked “3G Coverage” on the ATT map, and I can’t get a signal. I had a new 3G iPhone for 2 days and had so many dropouts in places where my Alltel worked fine with 4-5 bars that I took the iPhone back. for a refund. Beautiful phone, really bad 3G coverage. “More bars in more places” clearly applies to ATT overseas, but NOT in the US yet! I lived in northern VT for 4 years… I can’t begin to imagine all the dropouts and complaints that would arise from frustrated iPhone users.
