My G4 Cube Fishtank

By Jeremiah@smalldog.com

Last week I had the idea that the older G4 Mac Cube would make a great small fish tank. I asked around and saw that we had a broken one in Burlington. I then brought it to a local glass shop, where they custom cut a piece of 1/4 inch plexiglas for the bottom. I sealed this bottom piece to the rest of the tank with aquarium safe silicon, purchased at a local pet shop.

After about 1 1/2 days, the silicone was set and I began setting up the tank. I had some left over rocks from my other 20 gallon tank and an extra fake plant. I set up the Cube with the rocks and plant but there was something missing – the fish! I ran back to the pet store and bought a small Beta for the tank. I bought a beta because I’m not adding a filter, heater or air pump to the tank. Betas adapt to smaller tanks, and are fairly easy to maintain.

A couple of weeks later, and the Beta has adapted well to his new home. The light comes from an old USB Kensington FlyLight, which is plugged into a scraped iPod USB charger.

  1. Very nice! Just remember that Betta’s are prolific ammonia producers, so you want to keep an eye on the levels (it will be toxic if too high) and they are also great jumpers. Betta’s are known for making quick exits from uncovered tanks during cleaning. He is very handsome though and I am sure he is much happier now than he was when he was in one of the pet store “death bowls”.
