Using the iPhone on AT&T

I’m down here on the beach with my iPhone and it’s A LOT speedier then in Vermont. It feels as if I am on a mid-level DSL/Cable package. Loading web pages is nice and snappy and I get service pretty much where ever I go. Even on the interstate roads there were only a few places where I didn’t get service.

Hopefully all my web browsing, emailing and chatting will count for something when AT&T looks at my usage for the month!

I would love to try and get my iPhone tethered to my MacBook because I noticed that when you actually use Safari on your iPhone for some real web browsing it crashes. Not just a little either, within 10 minutes of just surfing the web, Safari crashed 5-6 times. Google Maps also crashes often which is really too bad. I hope some stability patches get released in the near future.

  1. If you DO get the tether to work, DO post it. Apparently it’s not working on OS X.

The moment that works, I’m buying one.

  2. Safari crashiness seems to be sporadic on my iphone. Try rebooting, that usually does the trick for me.

  3. I thought that AT&T service plans prohbited tethering. Has that changed?

  4. no, they just limit your data usage. smart people have found ways around this for years. But for example, if you want unlimited data for your phone, its $20 a month, if you want unlimited data for a pda, its $40 a month, and for a laptop (wireless card or tethered) it $60 a month. They call it “unlimited” but it sorta is because the type of device you use limits how much data you could realistically use. Now if you have the $20 plan and then manage to tether without them knowing, you save $40!

  5. I was at your burlington store and learned the iphone is not supported by AT&T in Vermont. Do you see this changing and do you have any suggestions on petitioning AT&T to support Vermont?

  6. @norm – This is very unlikely. Have a look at this – http://makkintosshu.dyndns.org/journal/say-goodbye-to-the-iphone-in-vermont
