Small Dog Wildlife

Being that we live in pretty much the middle of nowhere we see lots of different types of wildlife. Today Eric and the retail guys in Waitsfield found this giant caterpillar.

After snapping a few shots, I hopped on to Google and found this very useful site which helps in identifying caterpillars and it turns out this big guy is a Cecropia moth. it’ll eventually turn into something that looks like this:

Pretty cool, huh!

  1. Hey, thanks for posting this. A friend and I found one of these giant caterpillars outside his apartment building and also wondered what it was. We named ours Christopher. Anyway, we did a google image search for “giant caterpillar” and lo and behold, your posting came up. Neat! PS> We live in Toronto, Canada. Didn’t expect such “wildlife” here!

  2. Same here as with the Canadians. We found this thing on our porch and I thought it was a creepy toy. My husband touched it and it flinched and I ran. I finally came out with a camera to take pics because we were puzzled as to what it was a grub worm or a caterpillar. Thanks for your post. We are happy to see that it will one day not be so creepy.
