OLPC XO + Smalldog.com

Love it or hate it, the XO by One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) is bringing the power of technology as a tool for education to as many students in the world as possible.

OLPC Mission:

Most of the nearly two–billion children in the developing world are inadequately educated, or receive no education at all. One in three does not complete the fifth grade…
Given the resources that developing countries can reasonably allocate to education—sometimes less than $20 per year per pupil, compared to the approximately $7500 per pupil spent annually in the U.S.—even a doubled or redoubled national commitment to traditional education, augmented by external and private funding, would not get the job done…
Any nation’s most precious natural resource is its children. We believe the emerging world must leverage this resource by tapping into the children’s innate capacities to learn, share, and create on their own. Our answer to that challenge is the XO laptop, a children’s machine designed for ‘learning learning…’

To kick-start their mission, OLPC offered a program whereby consumers could buy two XO units, one of which they’d get to keep and one of which would be donated to a child. One of our customers here in the Burlington store (a happy MacBook owner) took part in this offer and recently received her XO unit. She was generous enough to come let me play with it for a few minutes. I had a great time learning the operating system, which was amazingly simple and intuitive once I’d had a moment to get a feel for the user interface (UI). This customer and I both found the touchpad a bit difficult to operate and decided to checkout mouse options. I was amazed to see that Apple’s wired Mighty Mouse worked right out of the box since it’s system requirements are Mac OS v10.4.8 or later, Windows 2000, or Windows XP and USB v1.1 or later. Even the right-click and scroll functionality was there! Considering that the unit has a CPU clock speed of 433Mhz and 256MB of RAM, it feels very snappy. I suppose this just goes to show the advantages of a “sparse” UI. The wifi range is also unbelievably powerful. The device as a whole reminded me of the infamous eMate, a rare form of the Newton.

Feeling jazzed about supporting the OLPC mission and the unique hardware of the XO device, I spent the evening researching the consumer purchase/donation program. Unfortunately the XO device is no longer for sale in the United States since the only way I could find to legitimately purchase one was through the donation program which is no longer being offered. I did see several of them supposedly available here and there about the web on sites such as eBay.

See a few more pictures on our Flickr page.

If you’ve got an XO, we’d love to see a picture of it visiting our new Smalldog.com!

MacBook Air On Demo At Retail Locations!

If you haven’t yet gotten hands-on with the MacBook Air, you can do so now at either of our retail locations.

I first saw the MacBook Air on a Macworld San Francisco Keynote live blog and lusted after it while pouring over tech spec pages and reading early reviews. The blogosphere has been ablaze with further reviews and benchmarks. Even mainstream media outlets have gotten in on the action.

The excitement struck me again when I first spotted our MacBook Air demo machine in Burlington while walking through the door after returning from vacation earlier this week. You’ll be amazed when you touch it. With a maximum thickness of 0.76,” a weight of 3 pounds, a 13.3” smart LED screen, a backlight keyboard, an iSight, and an ultra-large multi-touch trackpad all wrapped in aluminum, this piece of technology is really something to behold. Every element of the MacBook Air is perfected for its target user, even the MagSafe power adapter has been miniaturized.

One of my favorite “features” of the MacBook Air, and one that I predicted (along with the machine itself, although I called it a MacBook nano), is its reduced environmental impact. The volume of the retail packing has been reduced thereby requiring fewer delivery flights from the factory to the retail locations and the packaging itself is engineered from “largely recyclable” materials, the aluminum enclosure of the machine is “highly recyclable,” the LED display is mercury-free and does not use arsenic in the glass, all internal cabling is PVC-free and the machine as a whole meets ENERGY STAR requirements and has received a silver rating from EPEAT.

We can’t wait to welcome you into one of our MacBook Air-equipped retail showroom locations, and don’t forget to ask for some of our small dogs to remember your visit by!

All Time Machining and No Dragging-and-Dropping Makes Allen a Happy Man

I always back my computer up before traveling, especially if I’ll be flying. There are simply too many things that could go wrong on the road. My worries range from the fear of dropping my beloved sliver of aluminum, to being robbed, to having my machine inspected for weeks and weeks by the TSA.

Previously, I always tediously identified important files, then “dragged-and-dropped” them to an external drive, which I would leave at home. Occasionally I’d make a bootable backup, but these often took a very long time to be generated.

Before hitting the security lines for a recent vacation to visit friends in Louisiana, I decided it would be an optimal time to give Leopard’s Time Machine feature a shot. It worked like a charm.

I simply plugged my external drive in, launched System Preferences and selected “Choose Backup Disk” from the Time Machine settings and clicked the desired external drive, my LaCie 500GB Quadra, which is connected via FireWire 800. I went out to do some shopping, then put some dinner on the stove (er, got takeout) and came back to a fully backed up MacBook Pro. Wunderbar!

Every night since I’ve returned, I simply plop my machine on my desk, turn it on, connect my LaCie and my backup is automatically updated in minutes. It functions flawlessly (as I always expect with my Mac) and I’m hooked!

Not only is today the Keynote address by Steve Jobs at MacWorld in San Francisco, it is the release day for Microsoft Office Mac 2008, the first full new version of the suite since Office 2004.
There are several versions of the new Office 2008 software, each with different features and price points.

All three versions, Home and Student Edition (not licensed for commercial use, but valid on up to three personal computers), Standard Edition and a Special Media Edition include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Entourage, MSN Messenger, the ability to handle open XML file formats (Office 2007 compatible) and are fully universal for Intel and PowerPC-based Macs.

The Standard Edition additionally includes Microsoft Exchange Server support and Automator actions for Office workflows while the Special Media Edition adds the Microsoft Expression Media pack for digital asset management.
